A renowned German ballet director has been suspended for spreading dog feces on the face of a critic. Wiebke Hüster’s critique of one of Marco Goecke’s performances reportedly infuriated him.

During the intermission of another play, he allegedly confronted Ms. Hüster and smeared her face with dog poo from a paper bag.

Ms. Hüster’s employer, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), said police were investigating.

Hüster described the initial evaluation of Mr. Goecke’s play In The Dutch Mountains as being “alternately driven mad and killed by boredom.”

Ms. Hüster told the BBC that she was in “shock” following a “brutal” attack.

“When I realized what had occurred, I screamed and became frantic… I can promise you that it was not an act of spontaneity; he planned it. I consider it to be an attack against journalistic freedom “She stated,

During the confrontation, Mr. Goecke stated that he believed the negative review had lost the Hanover Opera Theater subscribers and threatened to bar her from the opera house.

Marco Goecke was suspended immediately by the Hanover State Opera because his “impulsive reaction” violated its code of conduct.

According to them, Mr. Goecke “seriously unnerved the audience, the personnel of the theater, and the broader public, thereby severely harming the State Ballet.”

According to the statement, Ms. Hüster’s “personal integrity was flagrantly breached.”

Ms. Hüster works for the FAZ newspaper, which described the incident as “an attempt to intimidate our free, critical view of art.”

Marco Goecke has served as the director of the Hanover Theatre since 2019 and was awarded the German Dance Prize in 2022.
