Career
In 1935, Mälk’s novel itsev Meri (The Flowering Sea), which depicted life in a fishing village, was a huge success. Taeva Palge Everything (Under the Face of Heaven) and Hea Sadam were the other two books in the trilogy (The Good Port). He also wrote poems, short stories, and two memoirs in addition to his 18 novels. His works have been translated into German and Finnish, among other languages.
In the 1930s, Mälk became active in politics. In 1937, he served in the National Constituent Assembly (Rahvuskogu). He was elected to Estonia’s Chamber of Deputies (Riigivolikogu) in 1938 and served until the Soviet invasion in 1940. During the second Soviet invasion of Estonia in 1944, Mälk fled to Sweden. From its establishment in 1945 until 1982, he was the chairman of the Estonian Writers Union Abroad (Välismaine Eesti Kirjanike Liit) in Stockholm. In 1987, he died in Stockholm.
