When Ashley Wagner was five years old, she choose between skating and ballet, and she started using ice skates. In her first competition, she took home a gold medal, displaying her commitment to and enthusiasm for skating.

The 1998 Winter Olympic gold medalist Tara Lipinski, a Wagner observer, made the decision to enter the Olympics herself. Dody Teachman served as her coach while she lived in Portland, Oregon. Later in 2002, she started working out with Shirley Huges in Alexandria, Virginia, where Jill Shipstad Thomas choreographed her competitive performances.

In the 2002–03 season, Wagner made his official debut in US national competition skating when he qualified for the U.S. Junior Figure Skating Championships.

Wagner placed 10th at her sectional competition, which prevented her from competing in the 2004 National Championships, despite placing 17th at the Intermediate level and winning a silver medal at her regional tournament.
