Who is Arthur Hunnicutt? 

Arthur Lee Hunnicutt is an actor who is best known for portraying wise, rugged, and old rural characters. For his role in The Big Sky, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He’s also recognized for his performance in the TV show Sugarfoot, a Western drama.

Early Life and Bio

He is most known for his roles in Western films from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, particularly his Academy Award-nominated portrayal as Zeb Calloway in the 1952 film The Big Sky. His other famous roles are Davy Crockett in The Last Command (1955) and Butch Cassidy [Criminal] in Cat Ballou (1965).

Career

Hunnicutt began her acting career in stock theatre and went on to perform in traveling shows. “There isn’t a respectably sized medicine show traveling through Kentucky, Illinois, Georgia, Indiana, or Mississippi, nor a stock company touring those states, that hasn’t got the name of Arthur Hunnicutt on its programs,” the Brooklyn Daily Eagle wrote on September 22, 1940. [2] After eight years of such activities, he enrolled in a Cleveland acting school to study theatrical skills for a year in 1936. [2]

He relocated to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, and joined a theatre group there. After relocating to New York City, he spent 17 months working in the laundry at the Algonquin Hotel before earning roles in Broadway plays. [2] He created the country character he would later be typecast as throughout his career while traveling as the principal actor in Tobacco Road. Hunnicutt was frequently cast as a figure who was considerably older than he was.

Wildcat was Hunnicutt’s first film (1942). In the early 1940s, he performed in many films before returning to the theater. He returned to Hollywood in 1949 and resumed his film career. In films like The Red Badge of Courage (1951), The Lusty Men (1952), The Kettles in the Ozarks (1955), The Last Command (1955, as Davy Crockett), The Tall T (1957), Cat Ballou (1965, as Butch Cassidy), El Dorado (1966), and The Adventures of Bullwhip Griffin, he played sympathetic, wise rustic types.
