Anna Friel is an English actress best known for her role as ‘Beth Jordache’ in the television series ‘Brookside’ (1993–1995). Aside from her performance in the series, her lesbian kiss in it propelled her to fame. Friel then appeared in a few more contentious productions that included nudity and sexual themes. She has various ventures in the British entertainment industry to her credit, but she rose to international prominence as ‘Charlotte “Chuck” Charles’ in ‘Pushing Daisies’ (2007–2009). Friel has won various awards, including a ‘International Emmy Award,’ a ‘BAFTA Award’ nomination, a ‘Drama Desk Award,’ a ‘Golden Globe Award’ nomination, a ‘Genie Award’ nomination, a ‘National Television Award,’ and an ‘RTS Award.’

Anna Louise Friel was born in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England, on July 12, 1976, to Julie and Desmond “Des” Friel. Her brother’s name is Michael.

Friel attended ‘Crompton House Church of England School’ and subsequently ‘Holy Cross College.’ She received her training at the ‘Oldham Theatre Workshop.’

Friel’s mother is a special-needs teacher, while her father is a former French teacher and folk guitarist who now runs a web design business. Friel’s physician brother had previously worked on advertising campaigns for the British flour and bread manufacturer ‘Hovis Ltd.’

Friel began dating actor David Thewlis in 2001. They met on a flight to Cannes. They have a daughter, Gracie Ellen Mary Friel, who was born on July 9, 2005, at London’s ‘Portland Hospital.’ In December 2010, Friel and Thewlis divorced.

Friel nearly died of septicemia caused by an ovarian cyst blast in 2001. She had two liters of blood in her stomach, it was subsequently revealed. Earlier in the day, she had been ordered to pull in her tummy for a cover photoshoot. Friel received two blood transfusions in the hospital the next morning.

Friel is an ambassador for the ‘World Wide Fund for Nature’ (WWF, originally ‘World Conservation Fund’) wildlife charity.
