Ricky Dubose

According to prisons personnel, Ricky Dubose, 29, of Georgia, who was recently condemned to death for the killings of two prison guards during an attempted escape five years ago, committed himself behind bars.

Ricky Dubose hanged himself. According to Sheriff Howard R. Sill of Putnam County,

“He died by his own hand. He could commit suicide in the time it took him to murder Billue and Monica. It requires little time to accomplish. That might occur within a few seconds if someone decides to do it.”

Employees of the Georgia Department of Prisons confirmed Dubose’s demise, according to the sheriff. The reason for death was not stated in the Sunday press release.

Ricky Dubose’s Prison Death

At about 4:45 p.m., corrections officers discovered Ricky Dubose unresponsive in his cell at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson. Sunday, according to a news release from the Department of Prisons.

The guards initiated assistance and requested medical aid. At 5:56 p.m., the coroner at the jail ruled Dubose dead.

According to Department of Prisons representatives,

“The emergency services were contacted, and efforts were made to save lives. At 5:56 p.m., the coroner pronounced Dubose deceased at the facility. As is customary, the GDC and the GBI will conduct a joint investigation into the fatality.”

According to accounts, Attorney Gerard Ward was saddened by Ricky Dubose’s passing. He said,

“Even though I had only known Ricky for a year, this is a tragic event for all of us.”

In June of 2017, Dubose and Donnie Rowe overpowered Curtis Billue and Christopher Monica in a prison transport truck. Dubose used one of their weapons to kill them. After robbing a passerby, he and Rowe escaped and eventually settled in Tennessee.

According to Bedford County Sheriff Austin Swing, the criminals were restrained and their property and clothing were confiscated at the time. The fugitives eventually turned themselves up. According to law enforcement, they surrendered themselves to a local man instead of authorities.

Dubose was sentenced to death as the actual shooter even though both individuals were tried and convicted separately. Rowe was given a life sentence without the possibility of parole. The attorneys for Dubose contended in court that Rowe influenced their client’s actions and that Dubose had an intellectual disability.

Gabrielle Pittman, a defense attorney, remarked,

“In fact, Ricky did shoot at people. “But you know who was behind the wheel and who handed him the weapons…it was Donnie.”

The prosecutor, T. Wright Barksdale, described Dubose as a “clever, determined criminal,” and the relatives of Billue and Monica hailed the verdict and sentence imposed on Dubose.
