Alice Longyu Gao- Birth, Age, Ethnicity, Siblings, Education

Gao, who was born and raised in China’s Bengbu in 1994, moved to the United States in 2012 to pursue her aspirations of becoming a pop singer. She became a downtown New York fixture by seizing any opportunity that presented her, alternating between the gloriously chaotic and aggressive art-pop of early singles like “Karma Is A Witch” and “Magnificroissant.”

Gao’s work has always had a fiercely individualistic feel about it. It wasn’t just that she did everything by herself; no one else did it quite like her.

Gao moved to the United States against her parents’ wishes when she was 17 years old. After studying for the S.A.T.s and the TOEFL exam for non-native English speakers, she applied to 16 institutions.

She got accepted to 11 of them after writing an emotional essay about her experiences in Bengbu’s LGBTQ+ community. (Gao identifies as pansexual.)

She majored in philosophy at Boston University and completed the Harvard University Summer Program in Kyoto, Japan, where she became fluent in Japanese.

Alice Longyu Gao- Professional Career

When a mutual contact introduced her to 100 Gets Dylan Brady in 2019, the term “hyper pop” hadn’t yet been defined through its title playlist — more of an accident, she claims, than an A&R setup.

Gao was unaware of Brady’s work, but she knew she needed an opportunity to write music on her trip to L.A., so the two scheduled studio time right away. When it came time to record, though, she was distracted and her discipline had slipped:

Despite her misery, she comes up with the idea for “Rich Bi*ch Juice” minutes before meeting Brady. What emerged was more like champagne-soaked hypnosis than a breakup ballad. “Have some juice, honey, rich bi*ch juice,” she drones over Brady’s sozzled beat.
